How the Hours Calculator Works

This calculator finds the elapsed time between a start and end time, automatically handling overnight shifts where the end time is earlier in the clock than the start time, then subtracts any unpaid break.

Formula

rawHours = (endTime − startTime), add 24h if endTime < startTime
hoursWorked = rawHours − (breakMinutes / 60)

Worked Example

For a shift from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid break, the raw shift time is 8 hours 30 minutes (510 minutes). Subtracting the 30-minute break leaves 480 minutes, or 8.00 hours worked (shown as 8h 00m).

Frequently Asked Questions

How are overnight shifts handled?

If the end time is earlier than the start time (e.g. 22:00 to 06:00), the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight and adds 24 hours before computing the duration.

Should I include my lunch break?

Enter your unpaid break length in minutes and it will be subtracted from the total shift time to give your actual hours worked.

How do I use this for a full payroll timesheet?

Calculate each day's shift separately, note the decimal hours worked, and add the daily totals together to get your weekly total for payroll purposes.
