How the Wind Chill Calculator Works

Wind chill describes how much colder moving air makes it feel compared to the still-air temperature, because wind accelerates heat loss from exposed skin. This calculator uses the official US National Weather Service (NWS) wind chill formula, introduced in 2001.

where T = air temperature in °F, V = wind speed in mph

Valid Range

This formula is designed for temperatures at or below 50°F (10°C) with wind speeds of at least 3 mph (5 km/h). Outside that range, wind has little meaningful cooling effect and the formula is not applicable — the calculator will note this and simply show the actual temperature.
