Always round up to the nearest full tile and box — buying a small extra margin avoids delays if you need more tiles from the same batch later.
How the Tile Calculator Works
This calculator divides your total room area by the coverage of a single tile to estimate how many tiles you need, then adds a waste factor for cuts and breakage, and converts that to boxes based on the coverage printed on the box.
Formula
Tile Area (sqft) = (Tile Width in ÷ 12) × (Tile Height in ÷ 12)
Tiles Needed = ceil[(Room Area ÷ Tile Area) × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)]
Boxes Needed = ceil[(Room Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)) ÷ Coverage per Box]
Why Add a Waste Factor?
A waste factor accounts for cuts around edges, corners, and fixtures, plus occasional breakage. 10% is standard for simple rectangular rooms; diagonal layouts or rooms with many cutouts may need 15-20%.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra tile should I buy?
Most professionals recommend buying 10% extra for simple layouts and 15-20% extra for diagonal patterns or rooms with lots of corners, cutouts, or odd angles.
How do I know the coverage per box?
Check the tile box label — it's usually printed as square feet or square meters per box. This calculator defaults to 10 sqft per box, but you should adjust it to match your specific product.
Should I buy tile from the same production batch?
Yes, when possible. Tile color and shade can vary slightly between production batches (called "dye lots"), so buying enough from one batch upfront helps ensure a consistent look.
