How Islamic Age Is Calculated

This calculator converts your Gregorian date of birth and today's date into the Hijri calendar using the standard tabular (arithmetic) Islamic calendar, then finds the difference in Hijri years, months, and days between the two.

Formula

1. Convert birth date and today's date to Julian Day Numbers (JDN) using the standard Gregorian calendar formula.
2. Convert each JDN to a Hijri (year, month, day) using: hijriYear = floor((30 × (JDN − 1948440) + 10646) / 10631), then derive month and day from the 30-year tabular cycle.
3. Subtract birth Hijri date from today's Hijri date, borrowing days from the month (29 or 30 days) and months from the year (12 months) as needed — similar to subtracting two calendar dates in any calendar system.

Why Hijri Age Is Usually Higher

Because a Hijri year (about 354 days) is shorter than a Gregorian year (365.25 days), roughly every 33 Gregorian years correspond to about 34 Hijri years. Over a lifetime, this means your Hijri age gradually pulls ahead of your Gregorian age.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Hijri age higher than my Gregorian age?

The Hijri calendar is lunar, with years about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year. Over time this difference accumulates, so your Hijri age count runs ahead of your Gregorian age.

Is this Hijri age based on moon sighting?

No, it uses the standard tabular (arithmetic) Hijri calendar for consistent, repeatable calculation. This may differ by a day or two from a Hijri date confirmed by local moon sighting.

What is the Hijri calendar used for?

The Hijri calendar is used to determine Islamic religious dates and observances, such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Hajj, as well as for general dating in many Muslim-majority countries.
